Coach's Message

11/14/09

The Spartans defeated Kirby in the second round of the state playoffs. This win was another step in our playoff journey. Anthony Hayes scored a rushing touchdown and threw touchdown passes to Antonio Cheatham and Cortese Christopher.   Julian Burton and Chris “Big Cheese “Stephenson had rushing touchdowns as well. The offensive line led by Deandra Simmons, Evan Chalmers, Seth Watson , Yancey Spangler and Salam Kako did quality work all night by providing rushing lanes. Adrian Ross provided many drive sustaining catches as well as yardage gaining blocks in the run game.

The defense continued to play as we have known them to play.   Kirby’s offense was pressured all night by Darius Buckley, Fred Harvey,  and Barron Thompson.  The entire defense did an outstanding job of playing full speed and full of effort the entire game.  Jerry Thompson along with Aric Thompson, Rajhan Watkins, and Anthony Matthews provided blanket coverage in the secondary.  Jerry and Julian also added key interceptions that stopped Kirby’s momentum on key drives.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a great night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. We also made afield goal that demonstrates our ability to be proficient in the red zone outside of scoring touchdowns.  Cliff Williamson and Matt Bennett did a great job of performing their duties in the kicking game as well.

By defeating Kirby the Spartans were awarded another opportunity to get better as well as prepare to take on another opponent. This time the opponent will be the Whitehaven Tigers.  This is a key game in our journey to greatness for several reasons. The fact that we beat the Tigers earlier in the season can be considered a advantage or disadvantage depending upon the way you view it. It can be a advantage if we use that victory as a opportunity to realize what aspects of the game we were not successful in the first game and work very hard this week in these areas. The early victory can be a huge disadvantage if we stroll into this game thinking that since we beat them once they will roll over and hand us a victory.  The great teams prepare harder the second time. The good teams do exactly what they did the first time. Our preparation should reflect our goal.

Throughout these next couple of weeks the Spartan family will encounter numerous opportunities to display critical life skills such as character, determination, and perseverance. These skills are not only critical to achieve our goal of greatness, these skills are critical to compete in this ever challenging world that we live in.    Hopefully the next 3 game weeks will provide experiences that we can celebrate and reflect upon not only in happy times but in all times in our lives.

Please assist our Spartan parents in our volunteer efforts such as the snacks for the players after the games.   These are opportunities for the entire football program to exhibit the greatness we desire.   The true sign of a successful entity is when the work of many is enjoyed by many. The sign of an entity destined for failure is when the work of few is enjoyed by many.  Please assist not just your child but the entire program in any way possible.

I speak not only for myself but for the staff as well as players when I say that your presence and support is immensely evident as well as appreciated. We look forward to you being louder and prouder next Friday night as we battle Whitehaven.

The Spartans defeated Cordova in the first round of the state playoffs. This win was the beginning of our playoff journey. Anthony Hayes scored a rushing touchdown and threw a touchdown to Julian Burton.  Julian also rushed for two touchdowns. Antonio Cheatham rushed for two touchdowns as well.  The offensive line led by Deandra Simmons, Evan Chalmers, Seth Watson , Yancey Spangler and Salam Kako  did quality work all night by providing rushing lanes. They were assisted in the run game by Torian Nickleberry.  Cortese Christopher, Adrian Ross, and Ryan Hill did a great job blocking on the perimeter as well as being viable options in the passing game.

The defense continued to play as we have known them to play.   Cordova’s offense was pressured all night by Darius Buckley, Fred Harvey, Robert Lee, and Barron Thompson.  Robert Lee did an outstanding job of playing full speed and full of effort the entire game.  Jerry Thompson along with Aric Thompson, Rajhan Watkins, and Anthony Matthews provided blanket coverage in the secondary.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a great night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Cliff Williamson and Matt Bennett did a great job of performing their duties

The Spartans defeated Mitchell on a slick and soggy night. This win was our regular season finale. Anthony Hayes scored two rushing touchdowns. Julian Burton also rushed for a touchdown. Chace Hailstock had a interception returned for a touchdown as well.  The offensive line led by Deandra Simmons, Jordan Beatty, Seth Watson , Yancey Spangler and Salam Kako  did quality work all night by providing rushing lanes despite the conditions and the obvious fact that rushing would be our only means of advancing the ball.   Cortese Christopher along with Adrian Ross,  and Ryan Hill did a great job blocking on the perimeter as well as being team players by putting their individual desires aside in the passing game for team overall victory.

The defense returned to form by not allowing Mitchell to score a offensive touchdown.  Julian Burton added two interceptions. Mitchell was pressured all night by Darius Buckley, Fred Harvey, Robert Lee, and Barron Thompson. Chace Hailstock played lights out all night.  Jerry Thompson did a great job as did Aric Thompson, Rajhan Watkins, and Anthony Matthews in the secondary.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a great night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Cliff Williamson and Matt Bennett did a great job of performing their duties despite the unfavorable conditions.

By defeating Mitchell the Spartans finished district play going undefeated in district. This is the type of momentum that is desired as we approach the playoffs. The playoffs will be our last chance this season to work towards our goal of greatness.  As we prepare for the playoff please take time to enjoy not only the destination but the journey that we have had all season.  Hopefully the next 5 game weeks will provide experiences that we can celebrate and reflect upon not only in happy times but in all times in our lives.

Please assist our Spartan parents in our volunteer efforts such as the snacks for the players after the games.   These are opportunities for the entire football program to exhibit the greatness we desire.   The true sign of a successful entity is when the work of many is enjoyed by many. This week the Spartans defeated Hamilton. It was a great way to recognize the seniors who are integral parts of our Spartan family. Anthony Hayes threw a touchdown to Adrian Ross and ran for a touchdown himself.  Torian Nickleberry added three rushing touchdowns and Antonio Cheatham rushed for 2 touchdowns. The offensive line led by Deandra Simmons, Jordan Beatty, Seth Watson , Evan Chalmers and Salam Kako  did quality work all night.  Cortese Christopher along with   Adrian Ross, Jerry Thompson, and Ryan Hill did a great job blocking on the perimeter as well as being viable option in the passing game.

The defense played extremely hard considering there were plenty of players who gained significant experience that will be beneficial down the road.  The defensive line was paced by Chris Stephenson, Jordan Barrett, and Daniel Richmond.  The linebackers led by Darius Buckley, Barron Thompson, and Chace Hailstock pressured the Hamilton offense all night.

Patrick McCarthy, Cliff Williamson, and Matt Bennett, led the special teams to a great night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Anthony Matthews helped determine good field position with stellar play in the punt return game.

This overall team win will hopefully springboard our Spartans to a deep playoff run. As we prepare for the playoff please take time to enjoy not only the destination but the journey that we have had all season.  Hopefully the next 6 game weeks will provide experiences that we can celebrate and reflect upon not only in happy times but in all times in our lives.

10/20/09

This week the Spartans defeated Memphis Central.  This is another link in our chain to greatness.  This game was another opportunity to reach towards our goals for he season.  Rushing touchdowns were scored by Aric Thompson and Anthony Hayes.  Anthony threw three touchdowns one to Julian Burton and two to Antonio Cheatham.  As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Jordan Beatty, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler.  Adrian Ross and Cortese Christopher provided stellar play in both the run and pass game.  The offensive line continues to do a great job every week and it would be impossible to give them the full credit that they deserve. l

Once again the Spartan Defense came up with stops when they were needed. The opposing team was pressured all night by Fred Harvey, Robert Lee, and Barron Thompson. Darius Buckley and Chace Hailstock played lights out all night.  The defense like the rest of the team and the majority of society are not where we would like to be but will continue to work to get there.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a great night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Clif Williamson and Matt Bennett did a great job of performing under pressure all night not just with the game winning kick. Anthony Matthews helped determine good field position with stellar play in the punt return game.

This was a good win for the Spartans. It would be all for nothing if we did not do what we are expected to do which is to continue to get better in preparation for a young and scrappy Hamilton team.  This will be senior night. Please come out as we celebrate and show appreciation to our seniors who have been the backbone of this program.

The team has 2 regular season games left which include 2 very tough district games. Each game is a separate opportunity to work towards greatness and should be treated as such. They are not interlinked or intertwined.  The results of one regular season game have no bearing on any other regular season game. WE must have this mindset in order to keep things in perspective. Victory vs. one opponent does not guarantee anything vs. the next.  The sign of a great team is the ability to stay focused on long term goals and not settle for small pieces of temporary satisfaction.  To beat Central and not improve this week would be not only an insult to our selves but an insult to our individual goals as well as our team goals.

Please assist our Spartan parents in our volunteer efforts such as the snacks for the players after the games.   These are opportunities for the entire football program to exhibit the greatness we desire.   The true sign of a successful entity is when the work of many is enjoyed by many. This week the Spartans defeated Melrose.  This game showed the power of a team that believes and stays together. These are the types of games that teams that aspire to be great must win in order to reach their goals.  These types of games will provide us with experiences that we can look back on not only in future competitions but in life when things get very challenging.

In this weeks game Anthony Hayes passed for a touchdown to Adrian Ross. Antonio Cheatham had two rushing touchdowns.   Torian Nickleberry and Anthony Hayes had rushing touchdowns as well. Julian Burton and Cortese Christopher provided stellar play in both the run and pass game.  As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Jordan Beatty, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler.  Aric Thompson and Chris” Big Cheese” Stephenson did a tremendous job in the closing minutes of the game by providing the Spartans with a capable running game.

The Spartan Defense came up with stops when they were needed. Julian Burton added an interception. The opposing team was pressured all night by Darius Buckley, Fred Harvey, Robert Lee, and Barron Thompson. Chace Hailstock played lights out all night.  The defense like the rest of the team and the majority of society are not where we would like to be but will continue to work to get there.

This week the Spartans defeated East. This win was another step in our quest for greatness.  Before discussing last week’s victory I must address the loss to Christian Brothers. There was no message after that week for no other reason than a computer error.  It would be cowardly not to post a message after a loss and only have words to say in times of victory. That is not the type of coaching staff we are nor the type of example that we would ever set for the young men that we serve.
In this weeks game Anthony Hayes passed for two touchdowns. Adrain Ross and Jerry Thompson each had a touchdown reception.   Anthony had two rushing touchdowns as well. Julian Burton rushed for 5 touchdowns vs. East. Torrian Nickleberry also rushed for a touchdown As a offense we had 455 yards rushing and over 500 total yards.  As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Jordan Beatty, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler.  Antonio Cheatham and Cortese Christopher were both effective in both the run and the passing game.
The Spartan Defense came up with stops when they ere needed. The defense like the rest of the team and the majority of society are not where we would like to be but will continue to work to get there.
Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a good night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Anthony Matthews helped determine good field position with stellar play in the punt return game.
This was a good win for the Spartans. It would be all for nothing if we did not do what we are expected to do which is continue to get better in preparation for a tough MUS team.
This off game not off week but off game came at a great time as it allows us to regroup and assess our selves at the midpoint of the season to determine what directions we should take to make a run at greatness. The team has 5 regular season games left which include 4 district games. Each game is a separate opportunity to work towards greatness and should be treated as such. They are not interlinked or intertwined.  The results of one regular season game have no bearing on any other regular season game. WE must have this mindset in order to keep things in perspective. Victory vs one opponent does not guarantee anything vs the next.  The sign of a great team is the ability to stay focused on long term goals and not settle for small pieces of temporary satisfaction.  To beat MUS and not improve this week would be not only an insult to our selves but an insult to our individual goals as well as our team goals.

This week the Spartans defeated Whitehaven. This win was another step in our quest for greatness.  A parent donated a banner that will be hung in the locker room that reads “Good is the enemy of great”.  This banner exemplifies the staff’s as well as the player’s desire to be great.   Greatness is something that very few even dare to achieve due to the diligence required to obtain it.  At no point are we taking our success for granted however we realize that once greatness is listed as a goal there can be no hints of complacency.  Therefore we will continue to reflect on our achievements and look for chances to improve upon them.

In this weeks game Anthony Hayes passed for three touchdowns. Julian Burton, Cortese Christopher, and Antonio Cheatham each had a touchdown reception.   Burton also rushed for a touchdown and had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.  As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler.  Adrian Ross was effective in both the run and the passing game.

The Spartan Defense is improved once again this week. Robert Lee and Chris Stephenson led a d line that pressured the offense all night.  Fred Harvey and Darius Buckley along with Chace Hailstock and Barron Thompson did a great job of pestering the Tigers all night.  In the secondary Rajhan Watkins played lights out the entire night. Both he and Julian Burton had interceptions.  Anthony Matthews did a great job in man to man coverage as well as did freshman Adrian Smith.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a good night overall in regards to PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Anthony Matthews helped determine good field position with stellar play in the punt return game.

This was a good win for the Spartans. It would be all for nothing if we did not do what we are expected to do which is continue to get better in preparation for a tough CBHS team. The sign of a great team is the ability to stay focused on long term goals and not settle for small pieces of temporary satisfaction.  To beat Whitehaven and not improve this week would be not only an insult to our selves but an insult to our individual goals as well as our team goals.

This week the Spartans defeated Ridgeway.  Anthony Hayes rushed for 2 touchdowns and passed for a touchdown to Julian Burton. Burton also returned a interception for a touchdown. Adrian Ross provided great play in the passing game.   As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler. To gain lots of yardage and score lots of points a team must have strong perimeter play. This was provided by Cortese Christopher and Antonio Cheatham.

The Spartan defense forced numerous turnovers. Chris Stephenson led a d line that included great play from Jordan Garner, Robert Lee, and Deandra Simmons.  In the secondary Julian Burton played lights out the entire night. Again Rajhan Watkins did a great job in man to man coverage as well as did freshman Adrian Smith.

This was a good win for the Spartans.  These are the types of games that despite the score being closer than anyone would want it to be, still count as a win. The good thing about this game is that it forces the true competitors to roll their sleeves up a little higher and work a little harder.  Those who aspire to be great realize that greatness is not something that is stumbled upon, it is something that is achieved.  To beat Ridgeway and not improve this week would be not only an insult to our selves but an insult to our individual goals as well as our team goals.

I speak not only for myself but for the staff as well as players when I say that your presences and support is immensely evident as well as appreciated. We look forward to you being louder and prouder this Friday nigh as we battle Whitehaven.

This week the Spartans defeated Briarcrest.  Anthony Hayes rushed for 2 touchdowns and passed for two touchdowns to Julian Burton. Burton also rushed for a touchdown. Anthony Matthews returned an interception for 99 yards and a touchdown.   As with any football game none of this could have been achieved without a great effort from the offensive line which was led by Deandra Simmons, Salam Kako, and Yancey Spangler.  To gain lots of yardage and score lots of points a team must have strong perimeter play. This was provided by Cortese Christopher, Adrian Ross and Antonio Cheatham.

The Spartan Defense is coming close to looking like the type of defense that the Spartans are accustomed to playing. Chris Stephenson led a d line that included great play from Jordan Garner, Robert Lee, and Deandra Simmons.  Fred Harvey and Darius Buckley along with Chance Hailstock and Barron Thompson did a great job of stopping the run. In the secondary Anthony Matthews played lights out the entire night. Rajhan Watkins did a great job in man to man coverage as well as did freshman Adrian Smith.

Patrick McCarthy led the special teams to a perfect night in regards to going perfect on PATs as well as several kicks deep inside the other team’s territory. Anthony Matthews decided the game with stellar play in the punt return game.

This was a good win for the Spartans. It would be all for nothing if we did not do what we are expected to do which is continue to get better in preparation for a tough Ridgeway team. The sign of a great team is the ability to stay focused on long term goals and not settle for small pieces of temporary satisfaction.  To beat Briarcrest and not improve this week would be not only an insult to our selves but an insult to our individual goals as well as our team goals.
